Yes, it takes practice, but not much as you were probably led to believe.
I want to share with you a shocking/frusrtating but quick story that you will no doubt relate to.
I was hesitant about sharing it with you but here goes.
A few years ago, a recently retired firefighter called Mike came to my studio for lessons.
He came to me as was desperate for help with his guitar playing.
He sat there trying his best to fingerpick a version of "Unchained Melody" and beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
He played with so much tension he was turning red..
His fingers looked like they were about to bleed.
The music was stilted, awkward and didn`t sound very good.
I honestly felt bad for him. This was Mike on his first lesson showing me his playing.
Worst of all, Mike had already played for months but had found fingerpicking and guitar playing in general way harder than he ever imagined it would be..
He had buzzing chords, sore fingers, slow chords changes, no complete songs but it ultimately led to a wonderful discovery which made fingerpicking for him so much more fun
Before I had met Mike he spent months trying everything. He:
- Bought a guitar book but found it was... too advanced for him
- Used YouTube, but although the videos started off well... they lost him
- Browsed Google but it was just full of random stuff.... with no specific plan
It was so bad that Mike practiced super quietly at home, hoping his wife would NOT hear him play and even waiting for her to go out before he practiced.
Mike told me he had knots in his stomach when he thought about playing guitar.
Months of this went by and Mike couldn`t take it any longer.
Especially when he saw others playing amazingly on YouTube and watching his friend learn guitar in just a few months.
Mike got himself a local tutor, and at first, things looked up, but after a while, he realised, he wasn`t improving.
Despite all the effort and sheer will to succeed, Mike still couldn`t play any songs all the way through.
Admittedly, Mike`s memory was not what it once was, but was trying...hard.
Yet he was going backwards.
What Mike told me next floored me!
His tutor was frustrated tutor getting more and more frustrated with him until one day, the tutor sat down with Mike said...
"Mike, I`m sorry, I like you, you`re a good guy but this isn`t working out. I can`t teach you anymore".
It was like a huge kick in the teeth to him.
"What is wrong with me?", Mike thought
Shocked and embarrassed, with the last bit of confidence in his guitar playing ripped away,
Mike went home, and was so upset he wanted to smash his guitar up
Instead he packed it up and stored it away - thinking he never wanted to play again - ever.
For Mike, he never wanted to be like Hendrix, or join a band - he just wanted to enjoy retirement, keep his brain sharp and play lovely music.
Learning guitar was too painful and playing fingerpicking like Paul Simon, James Taylor and his heroes was never going to happen.
Well Mike`s wife already knew a bit of his struggles and had already paid and booked him a block of 5 lessons for his birthday with me.
For him he had lessons before and they bombed, bought other products, and nothing worked.
He felt like he had no talent and no ear for music.
Mike really didn`t want to but couldn`t let his wife down, so gave he it tone last try.
He didn`t expect much and I could tell.
Yet, after hearing what you are about to learn Mike realised that it was possible for him to succeed.
At the end of the first lesson, he walked back out the door of my studio and he made a commitment.
He said: "No more messin` about - this is now or never, I`m going to do this properly, have fun and learn 3 songs on the guitar in six months".
I smiled and in the next lesson I made sure Mike started having some fun immediately.
I told him to practice with focus in this specific way for 20 minutes per day and he would see big improvements. He was skeptical but...
Mike knew real progress takes time and patience and occasionally old habits came back which we had to fix.
I was early in my teaching career and not very experienced. I knew to help Mike I had to learn more.
I studied a wide variety of guitar teachers, - most of which were clueless, but in my research, I discovered something special....
A method that was unheard of, rarely known and mostly not taught in 200 years.
I made Mike a specific plan of action using this "secret" knowledge that was designed to improve his playing in just 20 minutes of practice each day.
Together we got Mike to have more fun, and play with proper technique meaning no more pain or sore fingers when he played.
