Warning: How NOT to learn how to fingerpick
I have a student called Mike who is in his 60`s.
For about a year, Mike struggled learning to fingerpick on his own using YouTube and random advice on the internet.
Although he practiced hard, over time he felt his guitar playing was going backwards.
In fact, in his first lesson with me, when I asked him to play something, he played with so much tension.
His fingers were so sore and...
...He held his breath to the point it looked like his head was going to explode!
Even though he was normally a chilled guy, he told me he felt like smashing his guitar up on many occasions.
I could totally understand.
I had seen it many times before and you may have felt this way too on numerous occasions (I did!).
All he wanted to do was play some lovely fingerpicking pieces like Paul SDimon, JAmes TAYLOR AND HIS other muscial heroes.
The thing is, Mike was completely lost, had not plan, had terrible technique, zero enjoyment and just did NOT know how to spend his time practicing.
To sum it up, there were four big factors that were holding Mike back.
Two of these factors are "technique" and having a "specific step by step plan".
If you are like Mike, you are probably playing in pain or discomfort, have slow annoying chord changes, feel awkward when you play, have notes buzzing a lot, hit the wrong strings, etc. etc.
Even if you have the above sorted, you may just be lost with your playing and have no plan for how to improve.

Fingerpicking should be relaxing and enjoyable, NOT a physical workout where your fingers are left feeling sore!
On his lesson, Mike was sckeptical.
He had tried it all after all.
I knew I could help though.
I taught Mike a few ideas that immediately helped with his technique.
These were things such as how to sit with the guitar, play with a light touch, how to relax and breathe while playing.
I also took him through a specific plan how to practice to get the most from his playing in jut 20 minutes per day.
Over time Mike started to see little breakthroughs.
It took a little time as bad habits take longer to fix after all.
He got there though, and Mike`s story had an amazing ending.
The special moment came when he learnt how to play a fingerpicked version of The Beatles song "I will", which was his and his wife`s most treasured song.
He performed it front of her for their 35 wedding anniversary and the moment was special.
It even bought tears to her eyes.
Mike said that moment was one he will always cherish.

He no longer "hates" the guitar and he often sits in his holiday caravan playing, and even has the confidence to jam with his grandson.
The journey took longer than it should but thankfully, he finally got to where he wanted to be on the guitar.
